Elon Alum, Mike Trainor, headlines at Elon University’s Lighthouse Tavern to support Kappa Alpha Order’s spring recruitment
Elon University’s Kappa Alpha Order hosted a night of laughter, music, and awareness. February 6, comedians Mike Trainor and childhood friend Phil Mazo entertained the Lighthouse Tavern along with bands Three Day Weekend and Honorable Mention.
The event supported the MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). Trainor was more than happy to assist the brothers from his alma matter to make the night a success.
Trainor was a broadcast communications major and creative writing minor while studying at Elon. After graduating in 2003 he went to work for New York 1 News as a writer. After 4 1/2 years he decided to give comedy a try.
“I was always writing, and when I was at Elon I would do humor pieces for the Pendulum,” said Trainor. “I didn’t know in college this is what I wanted to do, I mean, I had a day job up until last April.”
Ryan Stimmel, outgoing president of Kappa Alpha, had the idea for this event in the fall of 2008. He was marketed through Facebook’s advertising system and noticed a banner for Trainor.
“The initial banner on Facebook gave me the idea to have Mike come to Elon, little did I know at the time that he was a KA from Elon and that it would be his birthday the night of the performance,” said Stimmel.
Kappa Alpha worked alongside the Student Union Board (SUB) to promote the event, creating a wider fan base. However the success of the night was the addition of local bands Three Day Weekend and Honorable Mention.
Stimmel commented, “I knew that having a comedian wouldn’t necessarily get people to come out so I talked with two of our brothers in the bands to see if they would play after Mike’s show.”
The men of Kappa Alpha were pleased with the evening, drawing in a significantly large crowd including past alumni.
Senior Alex Buchheim agreed with the success of the evening. “It was great to see graduated brothers and have a cool event for a good cause.”
The show began at Lighthouse Tavern around 9:30 PM on Friday, February 6.
